Questions about X-ray Technology

GDS offers X-ray systems for a variety of applications:

  • Handheld backscatter devices for X-ray inspections
  • Mobile X-ray systems for inspecting suspicious items and for material testing
  • Baggage X-ray scanners for bag checks, e.g. at entry control in courts, correctional facilities, hotels, and critical infrastructure
  • X-ray scanners for mail and package inspection
  • X-ray scanners for cargo and pallet inspection
  • CT X-ray scanners for explosive detection (EDS / EDSCB / HBEDS) and detection of prohibited items
  • Large X-ray systems for scanning vehicles up to truck trailers

GDS offers service and support throughout the entire product lifecycle. This includes:

  • Consultation and on-site meetings during the planning phase for procuring an X-ray system
  • Delivery, installation, and commissioning of the devices
  • Legally required instruction according to ยง 98 StrlSchV
  • Dismantling, removal, and proper disposal of old systems
  • Training for operators and administrators
  • Provision of spare parts
  • Maintenance (service and repair) of the systems
  • GDS has equipped over 60 courts in Germany with X-ray technology for entry control over the past 10 years; from local courts to federal courts, customers rely on GDS's expertise and product performance and reliability.
  • Especially in very tight spaces and difficult installation conditions, such as in listed older courthouse buildings, GDS has implemented a number of special solutions.
  • For GDS, personal consultation is of particularly high value. This allows for a solution optimized for each individual case to be offered.
  • In the area of conventional X-ray technology, GDS offers devices with tunnel dimensions of up to 180 cm x 180 cm, which can inspect whole pallets.
  • Devices with the commonly used standard tunnel size of 100 cm x 100 cm in the cargo sector are offered by GDS with low conveyor belt, high conveyor belt (for integration into an existing conveyor system) as single or dual view devices.
The X-ray systems offered by GDS provide a variety of AI-supported functions such as

    • Detection of batteries
    • Detection of prohibited items
    • Evaluation of container contents in the cargo sector

There are numerous applications in material and waste management, such as:

  • Automatic detection of foreign materials
  • Automatic detection of batteries
  • Integration into existing conveyor technology

GDS has already supplied X-ray technology to numerous private companies. Main applications include entry control, incoming goods inspection, mail inspection, and quality control.

  • GDS offers metal detector frames from the US manufacturer GARRETT.
  • These metal detector frames can be technically connected with the X-ray scanners from the manufacturer VMI, allowing the result display of the metal detector frame to occur on the screen of the X-ray scanner.
  • Simplified Approval Process (Notification Procedure):
The biggest advantage is the privileging in the approval process. While "normal" X-ray systems often require a complex and time-consuming operational approval, for type-approved devices a simple notification to the competent supervisory authority is sufficient. This significantly accelerates the commissioning process.

  • No expert examination required when replacing the X-ray tube
For type-approved systems, the technical safety has already been verified by the approval authority. Therefore, there is no need to obtain an expensive report from an officially designated expert when replacing the X-ray generator, e.g. in the event of repairs, or to apply for a new approval from the competent supervisory authority. This significantly reduces potential downtime and minimizes additional costs due to standstill and unavailability of the baggage X-ray scanner, leading to overall higher operational efficiency.

  • High safety standard due to type testing
The type approval guarantees that the device meets the strictest requirements for radiation protection, particularly radiation shielding. The dose rate at the surface of the housing is design-related limited to very low values within the legal regulations.

  • Legal certainty
The operator of the baggage X-ray scanner can rely on the fact that the device complies with the current state of technology and the legal radiation protection requirements. This reduces the liability risk in the event of operational inspections or accidents.

  • Summary
For use in security-critical areas such as airports or authorities, type approval is the gold standard. It makes the operation of baggage scanners safer, less bureaucratic, and more predictable with higher operational efficiency while providing the highest legal certainty.
  • Some models of conventional X-ray technology have TSA certifications.
  • The devices in the EDS and EDSCB areas have both ECAC and TSA certifications.
  • For the area of X-ray image evaluation, GDS offers training in collaboration with CASRA, a leading manufacturer of training software specialized in X-ray images, which is used worldwide in over 900 airports.
  • The training software is available for different applications (e.g. airports, critical infrastructure, correctional facilities) and device technologies (Single-View, Dual-View, CT, High-Energy).
  • Customs (vehicle and piece goods examination for hidden items such as smuggled goods, weapons, drugs, or cash)
  • Police (e.g. vehicle search for hidden items such as weapons, drugs, or cash)
  • Corrections (e.g. cell inspection)
  • Industrial applications for material testing
  • Counter surveillance (TSCM)
  • In the field of counter surveillance or TSCM (Technical Counter Surveillance Measures), GDS is an authorized specialist dealer for the products of the renowned US manufacturer REI (Research Electronics International), which has set a world standard with products such as the spectrometer "OSCOR".
  • With the detector arm, the device can generate both backscatter X-ray images and transmission X-ray images. Both methods are applied in parallel, so both image types can be produced with a single scan
  • GDS works with certified disposal / recycling partners
  • As part of the delivery of new devices, any existing old device is dismantled, removed, and disposed of properly.
  • GDS has an extensive warehouse of spare parts, so necessary spare parts are usually available within a day when needed.

Questions about Person Detection Devices:

  • The person detection devices offered by GDS (heart rate detectors) are designed for both stationary and mobile use.
  • Through the wireless networking of the sensors, a flexible setup is also possible in outdoor use. The entire equipment meets the highest requirements for environmental durability.
  • The devices offered by GDS in the MAGUS model series use AI for signal evaluation both for individual sensor evaluation and for networked sensors in multi-sensor operation, as used in larger vehicles.
  • Continuous testing improves detection performance while maintaining a low false alarm rate, and these improvements are made available in the form of software updates for already delivered devices.
